Cliff adds ‘Sunshine’ to Corona
MEXICAN beer Corona is banking on Jamaican reggae icon Jimmy Cliff to give it a boost in its latest campaign, Always Summer.
The 31-second television commercial, made by American marketing and communications agency Cramer-Krasselt recently aired on sports network ESPN, uses Jimmy Cliff’s 1969 track Hello Sunshine.
Produced by Trojan Records, Hello Sunshine is taken from the reggae singer’s self-titled album. The 11-track set contains feel-good hits including Wonderful World, Beautiful People, Come Into My Life, and the timeless Many Rivers To Cross.
In a recent interview with the Jamaica Observer, the 67-year-old explained his method when writing a song.
“When I write a song, I put my experiences into it as well that of other people around the globe… so everybody can relate to it,” he told the Observer.
“I have some new songs coming out, so you can listen out for those,” the Grammy winner continued.
In the United States, Corona Extra is the top-selling imported beer. Although widely consumed year round, it is generally viewed as a summertime beverage. It is commonly served with a wedge of lime or lemon in the neck of the bottle to add tartness and flavour.
This is not the first time Jimmy Cliff’s ‘services’ has been sought after by a major brand to assist in their marketing campaign.
In 2013, German automaker Volkswagen featured the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer in its one-minute 40-second Super Bowl television advert. Cliff performed a cover The Partridge Family’s C’mon, Get Happy.
The Super Bowl ads are the most watched in the United States for the year. Advertisers pay as much as US$3.5 million for a 30-second spot.
Cliff — star of the 1972 cult film classic The Harder They Come — is the only living musician to hold the Order of Merit, the highest honour that can be granted by the Jamaican Government for achievements in the arts and sciences.
