Kensington take command against St Catherine
KENSINGTON CC took command against St Catherine CA on the opening day of the rescheduled Jamaica Cricket Association two-day Senior Cup quarter-final match at Chedwin Park yesterday.
Captain David Bernard starred with an attractive 103 not out from 131 deliveries.
His opposite number Nkrumah Bonner took five wickets for St Catherine CA.
St Catherine were 14 without loss at the close.
Scores: Kensington 333-8 declared; St Catherine CA 14-0.
Earlier, St Catherine CA won the toss and asked Kensington CC to take first strike.
The Kensington first-wicket pair of Anthony Wadsworth and Leroy Lugg soon made them regret the decision.
Wadsworth hit 67, while Lugg contributed 42 in the opening stand of 111 runs. The attacking Wadsworth, who faced 78 deliveries, powered seven fours, two sixes and also benefited from a five due to an overthrow.
Number five batsman Ryan Francis chipped in with 44 before Bernard, who batted at number seven, took over proceedings. The veteran Jamaica all-rounder joined the fray with Kensington in a state of uncertainty on 122-5. He unfurled several stylish strokes against both pace and spin, and along with the tailenders, helped to compile a strong first-innings total.
Bernard glided a boundary backward of point off pacer Shannor Douse to bring up only his second hundred for the club in two-day cricket. Kensington declared immediately with Nicholson Gordon, who struck half-dozen sixes and a four, left unbeaten on 41.
St Catherine CA’s skipper Bonner, the national all-rounder, took 5-77 with his leg break bowling.
Left-arm spinner Coi Thompson took 2-100.
St Catherine CA openers Jemarrie Harris, not out on 12, and Hodayne Bryce, yet to score, survived a tricky period late in the day as light faded.
Play is set to resume today at 10:00 am.
