Shocker
WILLEMSTAD, Curacao (CMC) — Substitute Charlton Vicento converted in the closing minutes of regulation time to give host Curacao a morale boosting 1-0 win over Caribbean powerhouse Trinidad and Tobago in a friendly international here on Friday.
Vicento scored the lone goal of the match five minutes to full time as home fans erupted at the Sentro Deportivo Korsou in Willemstad, Curacao.
T&T squandered several opportunities to covert including the first clear chance of the game when captain Kenwyne Jones’s header narrowly missed the cross bar after he was picked out by debutant Kaydion Gabriel.
“This game will serve us well. We had some good moments but concentration needs to be better defensively, especially in the midfield, over ninety minutes,” said head coach Stephen Hart.
T&T are missing several of their regular overseas-based professionals against a Curacao team full of seasoned European-based players.
Also missing from the T&T line-up was Central FC midfielder Ataulla Guerra who sustained an ankle injury in training on Thursday.
The victory for the home side gave former Holland and Barcelona player Patrick Kluivert his first major win on the international stage since taking helm of the Curacao team earlier this year.
Curacao are at home to Cuba on Wednesday in a 2018 World Cup Qualifier, while T&T’s next international friendly is away to Jordan on June 16.
The Trinidad footballers are remaining in Willemstad for a couple days to train before returning home.
