Cal’s Jamaica Derby – The Analysis

THE day is almost at hand. Tomorrow 15 of the best three-year-old thoroughbreds in racing will compete for the grand prize in local racing, the Cal’s Jamaica Derby.

The Complete Racing Guide presents an analysis of the 15 starters.

1. COMPUTERIZE

Aaron Chatrie

C Khwalsingh

Has now reached the non-winners of three level but has always found the main age group contenders too hot to handle. Computerize will have to be well programmed to win this one, but a minor share is not impossible. Computerize – June 10 Trotted, June 5 Cant 9f Gal Last 7f 1352.

2. BONGO KING

Rayan Wilson

E Francis

Just started his racing career and as such must wait for other opportunities. Bongo King June 10 Cant 12f, June 6 Cant 10f *Gal Last 8f 1442 X 1303.

Bongo King

3. ROAD WI SEH

Ruja Lahoe

P Chang

One who is likely to make his presence felt in the early part of the race without really troubling the leading candidates at the finish. Road Wi Seh – June 10 Cant 9f, June 7 Cant 9f *Gal Last 8f 1440 X 1302.

4. TURBO MACHINE CAT

Clive Lynch

C Anderson

Has not done anything thus far to indicate that he is a factor for consideration here. Turbo Machine Cat – June 10 Cant 10f, June 2 Cant 10f Gal 9f 2010

Turbo Machine Cat

5. KRONUS

Richard Mairs

R Azan

The really big ‘if’ in this race. Announced his qualities with a resounding victory in the Lotto Classic for the Governor’s Cup in late May. There is no consideration whether or not Kronus will get the Derby trip of 12 furlongs. Has been steadily prepared and has shown further development at exercise and will simply enjoy the Derby course. Trainer Azan has a knack for producing Classic winners and if Kronus strikes tomorrow it will be because of his acumen as a conditioner and the ability of his horse to get the distance. Kronus meets Seeking My Dream, whom he beat in the Lotto Classic on worse terms, but this is adequately compensated for by the extra two furlongs. Kronus – June 10 Cant 9f, June 7 Cant 9f Gal Last 7f 1314 easy bt Edison.

Kronus

6. POKER STAR

Shamaree Muir

W DaCosta

Ran really well to place third in the Lotto Classic and was in the pickle entering the straight of that race. Fought back really well to finish third. Poker Star seems to be developing late and will probably get the Derby distance without much fuss. Trainer DaCosta has really made an effort with this one, and Poker Star could play the role of ‘spoiler’ in the Derby. Watch him! Poker Star – June 10 Cant 9f, June 7 Cant 9f *Gal Last 7f 1283.

Poker Star

7. ALI BABA

Robert Halledeen

W DaCosta

Is the highest ranked of the 15 starters in the Derby, being the only entrant to race at the Open Allowance level when he ran second to Hovercraft. That race on May 16 proved the undoubted class of Ali Baba and if that was the only criterion for winning, Ali Baba would be an easy victor tomorrow. But who can accurately predict the final result, when so many factors come into play? Ali Baba has the class, but can he get 12 furlongs? If he does and performs at his optimum, he will win. Ali Baba – June 10 Cant 10f, June 7 Gal Flat 6hf 1210 1141.

Ali Baba

8. ORIGINAL TRAIN

Winston Griffiths

H Parsard

Has the winningest jockey in Derby history on board. Original Train – June 10 Cant 9f, June 7 Cant 10f Gal Last 7f 1321.

Original Train

9. MERLIN

Paul Francis

E Walker

Has now won two in a row with the second a most eye-catching effort on May 30 around two turns, running on strongly. Merlin is developing really well, and comes from a camp which is currently experiencing a purple patch. Difficult to even imagine a filly winning the Derby, but is surely one to watch. Merlin – June 8 Trotted, June 6 Cant 10f Strode Last 3f 403.

Merlin

10. BERRANCA

Orlando Foster

A Nunes

Has been somewhat of a disappointment to date after promising so much at the start of the season. Berranca’s only chance seems to be her ability to effectively get 12 furlongs. A minor share might be in the offing. Berranca – June 10 Cant 10f.

Berranca

11. SEEKING MY DREAM

Omar Walker

W DaCosta

This horse has done everything asked of him, but has only his three wins to show for it. Seeking My Dream was second in the 2,000 Guineas and was also the ‘bridesmaid’ in the Lotto Classic. Seeking My Dream has been working really well for the Derby, even having his stable nemesis behind him on two exercise spins. If there is a problem with Seeking My Dream tomorrow it will be the distance, as he was caught and defeated by Kronus in the Lotto Classic. Good horse, well and truly prepared, but will he get his due reward in the Derby? Seeking My Dream – June 10 Cant 9f, June 7 *Gal Flat 6hf 1203 X 1134.

Seeking My Dream

12. SOUTHERN CRUISE

Andre Martin

A Nunes

Despite advancing his credentials after two consecutive wins, was a no-show in the Lotto Classic. That race brought Southern Cruise down to size and the Derby might be the same. Southern Cruise, however, will stay and if the others are out of sorts, will use his staying ability to garner a share. Southern Cruise – June 10 Cant 10f, June 7 Cant 10f Gal Last 7f 1320.

Southern Cruise

13.SIEMPRE BUENO

Shane Ellis

A Nunes

At this stage of his career Siempre Bueno seems unlikely to really get 12 furlongs, but he has class and anything number can play. Siempre Bueno – June 10 Cant 10f, June 6 Cant 10f Gal Last 9f 1582 X 7f 1302.

Siempre Bueno

14. Puddy Pooh

Jevvanne Erwin

R Azan

A filly who sparkled to win the 1,000 Guineas but was absent from the longer Jamaica Oaks. Her presence here might well be a ‘rabbit’ for stable companion Kronus. Puddy Pooh – June 10 Cant 9f, June 7 Cant 9f Strode Last 5f 1050.

Puddy Pooh

15. SUPERLUMINAL

Ameth Robles

H Parsard

A real interesting addition to the Derby and Classic landscape. Did not run in the 2,000 Guineas, but since then has had one good win under his belt on May 6 over eight and a half furlongs beating none other than Kronus. Seems to priming at the right time and trainer Parsard has been really finding the winners of late. DO NOT RULE OUT this progeny of staying sire Natural Selection. Superluminal – June 10 Cant 10f, June 7 Cant 10f Gal Last 7f 1321 easy with Original Train.
