What They Say! – Norris Freeman
When did you start your career as a groom?
In 1985 my career as a groom started. The decision to become a groom was a very easy one for me, as I was born into a racehorse family. My grandfather, Alexander Freeman, was a trainer and my father Noel Freeman was a jockey before becoming a trainer, so horseracing flows naturally in my blood.
Which horse was your first winner?
My first winner was Alloy for trainer Bernard ‘Bunny’ Vincent going over a mile. Winston Ellis could not have ridden a better race that day. I was so happy, it felt like electricity was flowing through my veins. That day was a very special day for me, one that I cherish and one I will never forget.
Which horse was your longest odds winner?
My longest odds winner was Big Money with Carlton Malcolm in the saddle. Big Money won and paid $2,900 to win, back in the day when the minimum bet was way below what it is now. That day, punters gave us little chance, but trainer Tony Kirlew (now deceased) prepared him well for the race and Big Money, as his name suggest, won well and paid ‘big money’.
Which is the best horse that you have groomed?
I would have say that Poorlittlerichgirl and Missmyrtleboyrichie are the two best horses that I have groomed so far in my career. As a three-year-old, Poorlittlerichgirl lost the 1991, 1,000 Guineas but came back and won both the Derby and St Leger in decisive fashion, which I thought were two outstanding achievements. That same year, she won the Superstakes. Missmyrtleboyrichie was an American-bred horse who won a lot of Grade One races. He won his races very impressively and while carrying maximum weight. He was a good horse, one that I liked very much.
Which is the best horse that you have seen race at Caymanas Park?
For me Eros is number one. Eros won all of his races very impressively; he won four consecutive Caribbean Sprint championships from 1991 to 1994 and came back to win it again in 1996. He has numerous track records, he was an outstanding racehorse. Missmyrtleboyrichie was another good one.
Who influenced your career the most?
Horseracing is my sport. I’ve the sport from I was a boy growing up but since I began my career as a groom, everyone has treated me well and I want to thank them for their support.
