Danniel Thomas captures discus title
DANNIEL Thomas gave herself an early wedding present after she won the women’s discus throw event on yesterday’s second day of the JAAA National Senior Championships at the National Stadium.
Thomas of Kent State University, the top Jamaican in the event this year, threw 57.67m to win her second national senior title after she won the shot put last year as Tara Sue Barnett of GC Foster was second with 56.56m and national record holder Kellion Knibb third with 54.71m.
Thomas, the former Frome Technical and Edwin Allen athlete who will marry her sweetheart next week in Kingston, said she was “happy” to win the event especially as she has struggled all season.
Despite a season’s best 58.77m, Thomas said giving priority to the shot put had caused her to fall behind in the discus.
“I am thankful for where I am in the discus as last year I was nowhere near where I am this year,” said Thomas, who will be focusing on the Pan-Am Games in Toronto, Canada, later this year.
