JAMAICA’S bad-minton players continued to suffer mixed fortunes at the Pan-American Games at the Atos Markham Pan Am/Parapan Am Centre in Toronto, Canada, winning two matches and losing two others yesterday.

Gareth Henry had a good day and featured in both victories after teaming up with Katherine Wynter to beat a Dominican Republic pair and advance to the quarter-finals in the mixed doubles competition, then teamed with Dayvon Reid to win their men’s doubles first round game.

It was the end of the road for the women’s doubles team of Ruth Williams and Katherine Wynter, as well as the mixed doubles team of Reid/Williams after losing their matches.

Meanwhile, today will be a ‘rest day’ for Jamaicans with none down to compete in any of the sporting events, but the intensity is expected to ramp up several notches tomorrow when swimming starts at the CIBC Pan Am/Parapan Am Aquatics Centre and Field House.

Short course world champion Alia Atkinson will lead the five-member team that includes Trudian Patrick, Danielle Boothe, Breanna Roman, and Timothy Wynter.

Yesterday, Henry and Wynter scored a tough 2-1 victory over the Dominican Republic’s Nelson Javier Ozuna and Daigenis Saturria, 21-17, 17-21, 23-21.

They will next face the Brazilian pair of Alex Yuwan Tjong and Lohanny Vincente for a place in the last four and a shot at a medal.

Earlier in the day, the men’s doubles pair of Henry and Reid beat the Argentine pair Federico Diaz and Pablo Macagno 2-0 (21-15, 21-14) and advanced to the second round where they will face Americans Phillip Chew and Sattawat Pongnairat.

After a first-round win on Saturday, the mixed doubles pair of Reid and Williams lost 2-0 (19-21, 11-21) to Peru’s Katherine Winder/Mario Cuba who were playing their first match of the championships after drawing a first round bye.

Williams tasted defeat for a second time yesterday as she and Wynter lost 2-0 (13-21, 7-21) to Peru’s Daniela Macias and Danica Nishimura.
