Former England youth international Patrick Roberts became the latest signing for big-spending English Premier League side Manchester City on Sunday, costing them a reported £5million ($5.4million).

The 18-year-old — whose fee could rise according to Press Association Sport to £11million — joins forward Raheem Sterling, England international midfielder Fabian Delph and Turkish striker Enes Unal as City’s new recruits since UEFA freed them from the financial contraints imposed under their Financial Fair Play rules.

City announced the signing via Twitter with a picture of Roberts — who has played for England up to Under-19 level and was an integral part of the Under-17 side that won the European Championship in 2014 — signing his contract but revealed no details of the deal.

Fulham, who had hoped to retain his services but whose hand was forced when he handed in a transfer request, simultaneously announced the deal for Roberts, who was described by former Fulham manager Felix Magath as an ‘extraordinary talent’.

“The club can confirm that Patrick Roberts has joined Manchester City for an undisclosed fee. We wish him the best of luck in the future,” read ‘The Cottagers’ statement.

Roberts played 22 times for the London club since making his senior debut last year… in a 5-0 thrashing by City in the Premier League.

Sporting sign Colombia forward Gutierrez

Colombian international forward Teofilo Gutierrez has agreed to join Sporting Lisbon on a three-year deal from River Plate, the Portuguese side announced on Sunday.

The deal for 30-year-old Gutierrez, who had spent the last two seasons at River, includes the option for a further season and a 40 million-euro ($43.3m, £27.8m).

Gutierrez, who had one previous spell in Europe with Turkish side Trabzonspor, was part of the Colombia squad at the recent Copa America in Chile.

His arrival at Sporting follows those earlier in the week of French defender Michael Ciani from Lazio and Brazilian Naldo from Udinese.

PSG in bid for Galatasaray’s Telles – report

French giants Paris Saint-Germain have offered Turkish club Galatasaray 10 million euros for Brazilian defender Alex Telles, Turkish media reported on Sunday.

The 22-year-old left back joined the Istanbul team last year from top Brazilian club Gremio in return for 6.1 million euros.

PSG had initially offered eight million euros but then raised it to 10 million, making a deal possible in principle although no contract has yet been signed, the Haberturk newspaper reported.

Galatasaray have reportedly been keeping an eye on PSG’s 33-year-old Sweden striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Champions Zenit beat Dynamo to make winning start

Reigning champions Zenit St Petersburg battled back from a goal down to beat 10-man Dynamo Moscow 2-1 and make a winning start in the new Russian Premier League campaign on Sunday.

Brazilian Hulk — last season’s Premier League top scorer — and midfielder Oleg Shatov netted one apiece to set Zenit on their way to a hard-fought win, while Alexander Kokorin was on target for Dynamo.

“I think that the goal that we conceded came against the run of the play,” Zenit manager Andre Villas-Boas said.

“But today we were the better team. We managed to recover to win the penalty and the sending off (of Dynamo defender Tomas Hubocan), of course, was the key moment in the game.

“After the break we were in trouble on occasions as Dynamo were really effective on the counter-attack.

“When you have a one-man advantage you attack more, you relax and sometimes you lose positional awareness. This win is very important for us.”

Russian international forward Kokorin put Dynamo 1-0 up just before the half-hour mark, beating ‘keeper Yury Lodygin from just inside the area after a cross from the right by Alexei Ionov.

Hulk levelled the scores from the penalty spot a minute before the break after Artem Dzyuba was brought down in the box by Hubocan, who received a straight red card.

Zenit soon made Dynamo pay when, in the 68th minute, Hulk found the unmarked Shatov in the area and he kept his cool to fire past visiting ‘keeper Vladimir Gabulov from the edge of the six-yard box.

Elsewhere, two-time former champions Lokomotiv Moscow won 1-0 at Mordovia Saransk.

Serbian forward Petar Skuletic scored the winner just before the hour mark with a header following Roman Shishkin’s cross.

Ronaldinho, 35, signs for Fluminense

Veteran star Ronaldinho joined Rio side Fluminense on Sunday, the fourth Brazilian club of his widely-travelled career.

The 35-year-old, a former World Cup winner, started his career with hometown club Gremio of Porto Alegre before moving to Europe where he starred with Paris Saint Germain, Barcelona and AC Milan.

He then returned to Brazil representing Flamengo (2011-2012) and Atletico Mineiro (2012-2014) with who he won the Copa Libertadores in 2013.

“I came here with the intention of writing history with this great club and to work hard,” said Ronaldinho at his presentation at Rio’s Maracana after moving from Queretaro in Mexico.
