DIRECTOR of Fisheries Andre Kong has hailed the formation of the newly installed Rio Nuevo/Stewart Town Fisherman’s Association as a new day for the local fishing industry. The body was recently initiated, to mark International Fisherman’s Day, at the Shiloah Apostolic Church, Stewart Town in St Mary.

“We respect the work that you have been doing and are very pleased that you have seen it fit to get yourselves properly organised,” Kong said. He urged them not to try and accomplish all their plans at the same time, but take small growth steps.

Kong also lauded the Sandals Foundation for being instrumental in assisting in the formation of the association through its marine sanctuary wardens. The fisheries director also hailed local fishermen for what he described as their outstanding contribution to the nation.

At the same time, he issued a warning to Jamaican fishermen who are operating outside the ambit of their licences. “Stiffer fines are coming for illegal fishing,” Kong said, as he implored the fishermen to advise their colleagues about the legislation and encouraged them to desist from the practice.

He further noted that overfishing had become a big concern in Jamaica. “If we don’t protect our industry, I don’t know where our fishing will end up in the long run,” King said.

Inilik Wilmot, manager of the Boscobel Fish sanctuary, which was instituted by the Sandals Foundation, pledged the support of the organisation in assisting the fishermen to create a viable local industry. Also speaking at the event was Councillor for the Boscobel Division Fitzroy Wilson who pledged his support to the association.

“I will try and put all my available resources to help you achieve your goals,” Wilson said.
