GEORGIA, USA — Giles Barnes continued his goalscoring heroics for Jamaica when he put the icing on the cake to boot the USA out of the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

The Houston Dynamo man gave his Reggae Boyz a sumptuous 2-0 lead with a piece of art, curling a right-footed free kick from 20 yards past USA goalie Brad Guzan in the 36th minute.

But Barnes’ effort followed another cheeky move from his teammate, Vancouver Whitecaps’s Darren Mattocks, who gave the Jamaicans their goalscoring start in the 30th minute, heading the ball onto the post and into the goal.

The win propelled the Boyz into history and into the final of the Gold Cup, where they will meet many-time champions Mexico at the Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia on Sunday.

Barnes, the former Derby County man, will savour that defining goal for a long time to come.

“It was a great feeling just to see it go in, and the feeling right now is just insane to come here and defeat a good side in the semis and we move into the final now, and hopefully we can get a win,” he said.

Barnes, 26, told reporters that while celebration here and back in Jamaica have started, he says the biggest party of them all will unfold after Sunday’s final showdown.

“Back in Jamaica, right now, there has got to be a party somewhere. Everyone will be happy and it will be greater when we lift the cup on Sunday,” said the hard-running and bustling striker.

Barnes, who also had a stint at West Bromwich Albion, said the victory was made possible in part for a well-executed game plan.

“We had a game plan, as the United States is a good team. So we thought if we could soak up the pressure, then we could hit them on the counter-attack and we thought that was the way to go forward and we are thankful that it worked,” he said.

“Obviously, it’s good when you get goals as that sets you up and puts you in good stead, although they came back and scored a goal. But we had a good game plan that the coach set us with,” Barnes added.

But the spirit of team, he claims, played a major part in the eventual outcome.

“The camaraderie is good; we fight for each other and we have such a bond as brothers. To see that we have come from different leagues and with one goal is just incredible,” Barnes noted.

“We obviously took a lot of heart from that… we just put out one of the big boys and that shows that we can handle the best.”

Barnes reiterated that the team’s participation in the storied Copa America helped in great measure to prepare them for the Gold Cup.

“Playing a great tournament like the Copa America, we didn’t manage to get goals, but we have come to this tournament and showed that we can score goals,” he said.
