1) When did you start your career as a groom?

I got involved in racing from 1960 at the age of 14 when I came into the industry to be an apprentice rider, but because of some circumstances I never got through. I went to seek opportunities elsewhere which led me to grooming horses. I got my licence in 1971 and from then on I have been with the horses.

2) Which horse was your first winner?

My first winner was Caliente, ridden by jockey top-notch jockey Richard DePass. I was so happy and excited when I won my first race; it felt like I was walking on the moon. A really good moment for me, one that will always remain with me, and one which I will never forget. Winning my first race led to many others but you have to start somewhere, so I really treasure that first win with Caliente.

3) Who was your longest odds winner?

My longest odds winner was Seduction with Joseph Buchanan astride. I don’t remember the exact odds, but he paid around $500 to win. At that time it was $20 for a win ticket. Well, I am always happy to win races and I am grateful for every one of them. When you win at long odds it is even better.

4) Which horse is the best horse you have groomed?

I have groomed some good horses, but for me it is between DJ Dancer trained by Michael Silvera and the The Doughnut King from the barn of many-time champion trainer Philip Feanny. Both horses are very talented, they won numerous races for me and they were easy to take care of. They were special to me and will always remain so. I am very grateful to have groomed those horses.

5) Which horse is the best horse you have seen race at Caymanas Park?

Well, I would say that Legal Light is the best horse I have seen compete at the

Park. Legal Light is the only horse I have seen carry some really heavy weight and win with it at all times. He was not a normal racehorse, he was a super horse. I am just glad I was around during the time he was at his best. It’s Legal Light for me.

6) Who has influenced your career most?

Well, the trainer I am working with now is Philip Feanny. Feanny has done a lot for me. I started out with him in 1974 and stopped for a while and then went back. He is one of the best trainers ever to train racehorses and I have to acknowledge him for that and for the opportunity he gave me. He is a very respectable person and I admire him a lot. Other people have also helped my career and I thank them all.
