MBU depart to face DC United in CONCACAF Champions League
TUCKER, St James — Three players who were not in the squad for their opening game against Panamanian outfit Arabe Unido earlier in this month, including a new signing, have been included in Montego Bay United’s squad that leaves the island today, via Kingston for Tuesday’s Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League game against American Major League Soccer team DC United in Washington, DC.
Defender Quante Abbott-Hill-Smith, who is from Canada, as well as midfielders Donovan Carey and Keniel Kirlew, who were in the team that lost in the Red Stripe Premier League final last season, were included in the team, the Jamaica Observer has learnt.
They will be seeking to earn at least a point against the joint Zone H leaders DC United, who beat Arabe Unido 1-0 at RFK Stadium in Washington, DC on Tuesday.
Arabe Unido had beaten Montego Bay United 3-0 in their first ever CONCACAF game in Panama on August 5.
Additionally, new coach Timothy Hankinson will be in charge of the team in a competitive game for the first time since he took over the reins two weeks ago.
The American was brutally honest in his assessment of the task ahead of the Jamaican team as he said DC United were well ahead in their phase of readiness.
Montego Bay United, he said, “is a team in preseason, you go against a team in Panama that had many preparation games and this team had none. When we go to DC United that’s a team in mid-season in the MLS, they (have) been training since January and maybe had 20 preseason and 30 games with cup competitions, we have had one game, the Panama game”.
“So we are at the beginning of the process whereas the teams we are playing against are in the middle of the process, so that means we have to accelerate our ability to be effective and keep faith.”
