KINGSTON, Jamaica – Former world 100-metre record holder and Jamaica’s team captain to the 15th IAAF World Championships in Beijing, China, Asafa Powell, on Sunday night apologised to his fans after failing to medal in the 100m earlier today.

Powell, who held the world record between June 2005 and May 2008, with times of 9.77 and 9.74 seconds, respectively, took to his Twitter page a short while ago to apologise.

“I am sorry I disappointed and let fans (and) Jamaica down at another championship,” the 32-year-old wrote. “There’s nothing you can say that I haven’t said to myself.”

The event was won by compatriot and defending champion Usain Bolt in a time of 9.79 seconds. Bolt was followed across the finish line by American Justin Gatlin, who finished in 9.80 seconds.

Many had hoped as well as predicted that Powell would’ve also been on the medal podium this time around. However, when the dust settled, he finished the race in a time of 10.00 seconds and in seventh place.

Speaking to the media after dashing the hopes of his fans, Powell said he didn’t have the legs for the race and that he ran himself out of the medals.

However, the man who is the most prolific sub-10 athlete in history is not giving up.

“I will continue to try and I will continue to motivate myself,” Powell tweeted. “I am glad @usainbolt (Bolt’s Twitter handle) took control and won. #Team Jamaica ALWAYS!”

Powell will next compete in the men’s 4x100m relays, when Jamaica would be looking to defend that title.
