JTA: Keep small schools with good potential open
THE new president of the Jamaica Teachers’ Association (JTA) Norman Allen has urged extreme caution as the Ministry of Education forges ahead with shuttering public schools, which are deemed to be under-populated.
Allen spoke against the background of a ministry-announced decision to close 18 public schools across the six educational regions when the new school year opens next month.
The JTA president told delegates attending the official opening session of the 51st annual conference of the association on Monday night that the teachers union is very anxious about the welfare of the students and teachers in the affected schools.
Against this background, he appealed for funds to be diverted to schools which are in need of significant support in light of the economic management programme overseen by the International Monetary Fund.
