First-timers have their say
The 11 races at Caymanas Park on Saturday last provided some intriguing moments for racing fans.
The continued improvement shown by Fortuneonehundred is being watched, with for now, blinkered eyes especially with two big upcoming races, the Alex Imports Gold Cup and the Diamond Mile. What we learnt from the Wayne DaCosta-trained imported gelding is that if left unmolested on the lead going anywhere up to seven furlongs, he is very difficult to beat. Fortuneonehundred won the six and a half St Cecelia with panache and seems to be getting in the mood for more lucrative purses.
Four horses: Brahmos (Image Maker – Gamma Knife), Jennandrosesgirl, Twilight Citizen (Legal Process – Good Citizen) and Who’s Bossy (Who’s Stayin On – Tiftavia) won for the first time. Brahmos provided his trainer Louis Richards with his first win for the season from only two starts. Indeed, Richards has not had a winner in a very long time, so it was good to see him leading in again.
Jennandrosesgirl is a three-year-old grey filly (Mineshaft – Nystate) from the barn of many-time champion Philip Feanny. Racing for only the third time, the filly easily defeated local non-winners of two, probably giving a glimpse of what is still unknown talent. Long-time owner Clovis Metcalfe must, however be pleased with the win on Saturday. Still too early to assess Jennandrosesgirl.
The country’s only female trainer, the long-standing Margaret Parchment, got the chance to celebrate her second winner in 2015 from 28 starts. The Parchment-trained Who’s Bossy with Kuri Powell easily won over 1,500 metres in a four-year-old and up maiden race. Looking out for more winners, Margaret.
Twilight Citizen came good after three poor previous efforts and provided jockey Omar Walker with his only win on the card.
Jockey Shane Ellis seems to be pulling away in the race of the reinsmen. Ellis’s lead is now four after he rode a double on Saturday (Brahmos and Bars of Gold). His main rival Robert Halledeen rode one winner (Fortuneonehundred), to keep in touch. It is not surprising that Walker, in third position, leads the lot in terms of stakes earned after winning the 1,000 Guineas and the Cal’s Jamaica Derby.
