Attorney banned for ‘professional misconduct’
KINGSTON, Jamaica – Attorney-at-law Arlean Moreta Beckford has been banned from practising the profession in Jamaica as a result of what the General Legal Council (GLC) describes as “professional misconduct”.
The GLC in a press advertisement Wednesday, September 16, announced that the Kingston 10-based lawyer was on September 1 struck from the roll of attorneys-at-law entitled to practise in the courts of Jamaica.
The GLC said that Moreta Beckford was found guilty of professional misconduct in that, in acting on behalf of a client in the sale of a property, she “failed to account for the sum of $734,995.00 being part of the proceeds of sale and that she had misappropriated same”.
“The Disciplinary Committee was of the view that the attorney’s conduct was reprehensible and that in addition to an order for restitution, in the protection of the public, a striking off order was necessary,” the advertisement said.
