Cops recover firearm of slain colleague
KINGSTON, Jamaica – The police say they have recovered the service pistol that was being used by their dead colleague, Constable Lynden Barrett, at the time of his murder. A man was also arrested in the process.
The lawmen were reportedly patrolling Wellington Street in Kingston about 12:05 this morning when they say a group of men aroused their suspicion. The men were accosted and while searching their possessions, the officers found a Glock 17 pistol and eighteen 9mm rounds.
The man found in possession of the firearm was taken into custody, however, his identity is being withheld pending further investigations.
Later checks revealed that the weapon was the service pistol of the deceased constable.
Barrett, who was attached to the Kingston Western Police Division, was shot dead near Wellington Street on July 21.
Investigators have already charged two suspects who they believe were involved in the murder of Constable Barrett. They are Horatio Livine, otherwise called ‘Ratio’ and Gratiano Green, otherwise called ‘Beh Beh’. They were arrested in August during operations in Manchester and Red Hills, St Andrew.
A third suspect, identified as Nicholas Drummond, otherwise called ‘Titty Dollar’, who was on the run for more than a month, was finally apprehended on September 5 but managed to escape a day later when he was taken to the Kingston Public Hospital for medical treatment.
Drummond, it was reported, ran into a nearby community after leaving the hospital and was chased by policemen. However, a policeman was shot and injured by gunmen who police said assisted in the escape of the accused. The injured policeman was admitted to hospital.
