Marcus Garvey, St James score wins in daCosta Cup

DRAX HALL, St Ann — Marcus Garvey Technical made it two wins in a row when they blanked Brown’s Town High 2-0 in their Flow/ISSA daCosta Cup Zone I game played at Drax Hall yesterday, to race to the top of the points table.

Daniel Green and Allain Black were the scorers for the Marcus Garvey team who had beaten Ocho Rios High 1-0 on Saturday and are on six points, three more than second-placed York Castle High who play today.

At Jarrett Park, former champions St James High opened their account with a 4-1 win over Irwin High in a Zone A game that was brought forward by a day.

Ackeem Campbell and O’Shain Powell scored for St James High in the first half, while substitute Roderick Haughton and Ronaldo McLeish added two more in the second half for St James High, who joined Cornwall College on three points at the top of Zone A.

Sachin Wilmott, also a second-half substitute, scored Irwin High’s goal as they have now lost both games played by a combined 12-2 margin after being beaten 8-1 by Cornwall College on Saturday and have now lost 10 games in a row.

Meanwhile, 30 more games will be played today, including three featuring teams that won on Saturday against each other, while other winners including defending champions Clarendon College will be keen to extend winning starts.

DeCarteret College host Mile Gully in a Zone F top-of-the-zone clash; Zone J leaders St Mary Technical and Tacky High will meet, while McGrath High and Dinthill Technical will meet in Zone K.

Mile Gully are coming off a 6-0 hammering of Winston Jones High on Saturday and could start favourites over DeCarteret, who edged Belair 1-0.

Zone J is expected to be competitive this season and both St Mary Technical and Tacky High will seek the early advantage, while Dinthill Technical, who are expected to at least make it to the top eight, will seek to win at McGrath and avenge an upset loss there last season.

Defending champions Clarendon College looked smooth in their 6-1 beating of Edwin Allen High on Saturday and Kellits High could be in for a long afternoon.

St Elizabeth Technical will hope to rebound from Saturday’s surprise 1-1 draw at home to Maggotty High when they travel about five miles down the road to face Zone E leaders Lacovia in what could be an interesting game.

Maggotty High will be home to Munro College and will fancy their chances after the visitors were held goalless by BB Coke on Saturday.

Rusea’s High will make their first appearance away to Green Island and will hope to avenge their 3-0 loss there in the return round last year.

Green Island won their opening game 4-0 on Saturday over Merlene Ottey High and lead the zone on goal difference over Frome Technical.

Cornwall College could face their first real test in Zone A today when they face Green Pond at Jarrett Park, as they seek to extend their Zone A win streak to 10 games.

Green Pond were the last team to beat Cornwall College in the final set of first-round games two seasons ago.

Unfancied Maude McLeod could take the lead in Zone D when they host Petersfield after beating Little London in the opening game on Saturday.
