Campbell falls short of ton on day two of trial match
Left-handed opener John Campbell fell 12 runs short of a century on yesterday’s second day of the Jamaica cricket trial match between Campbell’s XI and Paul Palmer’s at Sabina Park.
Campbell, who turns 22 next week, hit seven fours and three sixes in his knock before he drove a flighted delivery from wrist-spinner Damion Jacobs into the hands of Tamar Lambert at mid-off.
The former West Indies youth batsman faced 147 balls for his 88 as his team closed the day on 193-6 in reply to Palmer’s XI’s 308.
Scores: Palmer’s XI 308 (91.5 overs); Campbell’s XI 193-6 (66 overs).
Campbell, who also made a half century in last week’s opening trial match, was supported by wicketkeeper/batsman Kemar Marshall, who made 50 off 111 balls. He struck four boundaries and two sixes.
So far for Palmer’s XI, left-arm finger spinner Coi Thompson has taken 2-25 off 14 overs, while Jacobs has figures of 2-74 off 20.
Earlier, Palmer’s XI resumed from their overnight score of 263-4 and were dismissed in short order.
All-rounder Ravmon Powell was the lone resistance on the day with 40.
Brandon King, who retired hurt on 103 on Wednesday, did not return to bat.
Andre McCarthy (57) and former Jamaica Captain Tamar Lambert (51) were the other main scorers for Palmer’s XI on the opening day.
Left-arm quick Sheldon Cotterell grabbed 2-35 off 13 overs to lead the way for Campbell’s XI.
Fellow pacers Christopher Powell and Nicholson Gordon ended with identical figures of 2-52 off 12 overs.
Today’s final day’s play is scheduled to start at 9:30 am.
The next trial game is scheduled for next week.
The trial matches are geared at helping selectors pick Jamaica’s squad for the second staging of the Professional Cricket League, set to begin November 6.
