Portland abuzz today
PORTLAND, Jamaica – A raft of activities are planned for the rustic parish of Portland today (Heroes Day). The Moore Town Maroons in the Rio Grande Valley are expected to celebrate 276 years of Yenkunkun practice at the statue of National Heroine Nanny.
The annual celebration will include a special children’s village, traditional dancing, singing and drumming. The celebration will also include the Blue and John Crow mountains listing as a world heritage site.
Government ministers Julian Robinson and Lisa Hanna are expected to be in attendance.
Also, the third staging of the Portland Art Show is scheduled for the Art Gallery (Old Railway), West Palm Avenue. Hand craft and ceramics will also be on display.
“There will be a team of artist displaying their work who have captured portraits, nature scenes and country life scenes. Seventeen artists will be involved and comprise experienced and young upcoming artists,” organiser Mark Bell told OBSERVER ONLINE.
