A technology manager at a private hospital in Kingston, accused of defrauding telecoms operator Digicel of US$200,000, had his bail extended when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.

Thirty-nine-year-old Shawn Allen, a resident of a Gregory Park, St Catherine address, is charged with breaching the Telecommunications Act and conspiracy to defraud.

Reports are that, following a report made by Digicel Jamaica Limited, a team of police officers from the Organised Crime Investigation Division, along with Digicel personnel, carried out an operation at the hospital and at the accused man’s home.

The team was reportedly led to the locations, based on coordinates they received through equipment used by Digicel to track down the devices used to carry out the bypass of international calls to Jamaica.

A number of equipment believed to have been used to facilitate the bypass were allegedly seized by the Communication Forensic and Cybercrimes Unit.

Digicel Jamaica Limited is contending that it suffered revenue loss estimated at US$200,000 between August and October 2014 as a result of the alleged bypass.

Pending an outstanding cyber crime report, the case was set for mention on December 8, by which time the cybercrime report is expected to be on file.
