The Superstakes, always a race to win – racing professionals

The Superstakes, always a race to win – racing professionals

Trainers and jockeys give their thoughts on the Burger King-sponsored Superstakes

SHANE ELLIS (Jockey): The Superstakes is a great race, the excitement alone tells a lot of its expectations. This prestigious race draws some attention to racing as everybody wants to win this race and I think it has always been an important event on the racing calendar.

Lorne Kirlew (Trainer): The Superstakes is a race everyone looks forward to. It is one of the most prestigious races on the calendar and everyone wants to win it. However, the Superstakes has been losing its competitiveness over the years. At present, the winner of the Superstakes boils down to about two or three horses compared with the old days when you had like four to five horses fighting for top honours. It is losing the juice in competitiveness, but it is a race everyone comes out to watch.

Spencer Chung (Trainer): The Superstakes is an exciting race, it is a big race and it is a race worth winning. Typewriter has been training well and everything is going alright. I am just hoping that he can come good on the day, but overall, it has always been a wonderful race.

Richard Mitchell (Jockey): It is a very exciting race. The Superstakes is a very big race but unfortunately, I am going to miss that race due to religious commitment. Everyone will be looking forward to it.

Ian Spence (Jockey): The Superstakes has always been a tremendous race and every year it draws attention to the track and everyone works really hard as they want to win the race. So, the Superstakes is a wonderful event on the calendar.

Shamaree Muir (Jockey): This is a race that everyone wants to win, the Superstakes. It is talked about a lot and the build-up towards the race has always been tremendous.

Linton Steadman (Apprentice rider): The Superstakes has always been a race worth watching and everyone wants to win a race like the Superstakes. This race draws attention and has always been supported by many.

Edward Hamilton (Trainer): Everyone wants to win this race, as so much goes into this prestigious event. This race has tremendous values and everyone will be looking forward to it. Unfortunately, I don’t have any horse to run in the race but I will be there to watch the race as its excitement always draws attention.

Wayne DaCosta (champion trainer) – For sure the Superstakes is among the list of more important races on the local calendar. The Superstakes conjures good memories of outstanding thoroughbreds showing their class and ability over 10 furlongs. It is a race I would like to win, as I have not done so in the past. The race has lost some of its excitement, in the past five years or so, but it is my hope that with the new sponsorship of Burger King, things will change. A great race overall.
