THE curtains will come down on the Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA)

50-over competition when University of the West Indies (UWI) challenge the title-holders St Catherine CC in today’s day/night championship match at Sabina Park.

The first ball is scheduled to be bowled at 2:00 pm.

Though the Danza Hyatt-captained St Catherine CC have greater history in the competition, which includes last season’s triumphant run, the teams appear evenly matched based on performances in this campaign.

University of the West Indies are led by newly appointed Jamaica Scorpions four-day skipper Paul Palmer.

Added intrigue will come in the form of the rarity of having a major cricket match played under lights at Sabina Park. It will be interesting to see which team adjusts to the conditions better.

UWI were dominant throughout the preliminary stage, losing to St Ann CA in the final game when top spot in the zone was already secured.

The UWI team, eliminated in last season’s quarter-finals, defeated Kingston CC at the same stage this year. Medium pace all-rounder Ravmon Powell took 6-54 to lead UWI, while Palmer struck a half-century and Chrishna Graham contributed useful runs.

In the semi-final clash versus Kensington CC, Powell was again into the thick of the action. He grabbed 5-31 and was supported by Graham’s 43 as UWI won by four wickets.

During the zone stage, St Catherine CC were defeated by parish rivals St Catherine CA, but did enough to reach the knockout rounds.

They have not looked back since.

They recorded a quarter-final win over St Ann, despite Xavier Marshall’s century, thanks to left-arm spinner Stephan Casey’s 4-47 and half-centuries from former Jamaica Captain Tamar Lambert and Gavin Wallace.

In the semi-finals, they absolutely pummelled St James en route to an eight-wicket victory.

Leg spinner Brown and Lambert, through his part-time off-spin, ended with figures of 4-17 and 3-13, respectively. Shacoya Thomas made an unbeaten 36.
