Jamaica is no banana republic under the Portia Simpson Miller Administration, so the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) must return to the Senate and treat matters of State with patriotism, professionalism, and respect.

It is curious that just five months ago Delroy Chuck, the JLP’s spokesperson on justice, was compelled to resign in defence of a court ruling to uphold the independence of the Senate. Today, in total contradiction of his previous stance, Chuck, who is not a member of the Senate, appears to act in the position of Opposition Senate Whip, and threatens JLP senators who do not vote his way with “embarrassment”. This is obstructive and despotic behaviour.

Meanwhile, Senator Malahoo-Forte’s obstructive behaviour and disingenuous bathroom and lunchroom tactics were designed to prevent the Caribbean Court of Jusice (CCJ) matters from being brought to vote. What the Justice Minister Senator Mark Golding calls Lettergate is a deliberate attempt to interrupt the agenda of the Parliament’s Upper Chamber. This type of legislative obstruction has no room in the Westminster system and cannot for long prevent the Jamaican people from the benefits of their Upper House.

The JLP’s most recent announcement to return the issue of the CCJ to the Privy Council on appeal if it secures the required number of votes is indicative of the innate contempt for the Jamaican Parliament, the highest decision-making body for the independent people of Jamaica. This reckless announcement also demonstrates the JLP’s scant regard for the elected Lower House of Parliament, which echoes the voices, concerns and decisions of our triumphant, proud and free nation.

The Opposition has exposed the true purpose of Malahoo-Forte’s actions and Delroy Chuck’s frequent diatribes. Without warning, they have absconded the sitting of the Senate and stand to obstruct the debates around the CCJ. Senator Malahoo-Forte has further shown her disregard for the Senate by discussing matters of the Senate on social media.

The young people support the removal of the remaining shackles of colonialism slowing down the development of our country and people; the JLP is to show similar patriotism towards the State.
