Man destroys JUTC bus window claiming driver disrespected him
A man who threw a stone and damaged the rear window of a Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) bus, following an argument with the bus driver told the court that he did it because the driver had disrespected him.
But, according the police report, 56-year-old Paul Steadman had indicated to them that his intention was to hit the driver with the stone.
“Offica, a him mi did waa lick with the stone, but a little boy did deh inna di way so mi just lick out di window,” Steadman reportedly told the police when he was cautioned.
The incident occurred on October 15 around 6:00 pm at the vicinity of the Cool Oasis Service Station on Hagley Park Road in St Andrew.
The court heard that the complainant boarded the bus at Breaton, Portmore, St Catherine, and on reaching Hagley Park Road an argument developed between him and the driver after he told the driver that he did not have any bus fare.
On reaching the bus stop at Cool Oasis Service Station, Steadman exited the bus and threw a stone in the back of the bus destroying the rear window which is said to cost $500,000.
He was, however, held by passengers and handed over to the police and charged with malicious destruction of property.
On Wednesday when he appeared in court he pleaded guilty and indicated that he had family overseas who would be willing to compensate the JUTC. He was then remanded until November 5.
