HAMILTON, Bermuda (CMC) — A 22-year-old Bermudan police officer is recovering in the United Kingdom after being stabbed at a nightclub in the Buckinghamshire town of Milton Keynes, his family and officials here have said.

Kyle Godfrey suffered a punctured lung in the weekend attack and will not be allowed to fly back to Bermuda for at least a month until his injury has sufficiently healed, but is said to be in “good spirits”.

A 25-year-old man, Kier Lawrie, has since appeared in court in Milton Keynes in connection with the attack and was remanded in custody to appear at another court on November 30.

He has been charged with one count of wounding with intent and one count of possession of a bladed article in a public place.

Godfrey’s mother, Jeana Jones, said her son was halfway through a two-week holiday when the nightclub attack took place. He was released from hospital on Tuesday.

Jones said she plans to fly to Britain this weekend to see her son, who is recuperating at a friend’s home in London.

A Bermuda Police Service (BPS) spokesman said “we were disturbed to hear that one of our officers was attacked at a nightclub while vacationing in England this weekend. We are hugely relieved that his injuries did not end up any worse than they are. We will be watching the progress of this case with interest. In the meantime, we are making sure that our officer is supported while he is overseas and we are looking forward to his full and speedy recovery.”
