Henry, Wynter dominate badminton champs
GARETH Henry and Kathrine Wynter were the toasts at the All Jamaica Seniors and Masters Badminton Championships when they easily won the men’s and women’s singles titles, respectively, at the Constant Spring Golf Club Racquet Complex, which ended on Sunday night.
Henry retained the men’s title when he brushed aside Samuel Ricketts 21-10 and 21-13, while Wynter got the better of Ruth Williams 21-13 and 21-13 to retain her title.
Henry wasted no time as he dominated his opponent from start to finish with some backhand and forehand shots that gave Ricketts no chance in a set that finished 21-10. The second set continued as the first, with Henry giving little away to beat Ricketts 21-13 for yet another singles title.
Wynter, on the other hand, toyed with her opponent from start to finish. Winter showed more aggression in winning the first set 21-13 before she took the second set 21-13 in a one-sided affair that lasted only 25 minutes.
“The match wasn’t that challenging as I expected more from the opponent, but she put up a fight nonetheless and I am happy that I came out on top,” Wynter told the Jamaica Observer.
Local badminton queen Geordine Henry came out of retirement and teamed up with her brother Gareth to defeat the pair of Garron Palmer and Mikaylia Haldane 21-18, 18-21 and 21-14 to defend their mixed doubles title.
“This is my strength event — the mixed doubles — and coming out of retirement and defending my title is good. I am not playing all the games as yet, as I think that I am not 100 per cent ready, but I am happy with my performance,” Henry said.
In other results, Dennis Coke and Anthony McNee defeated Samuel Ricketts and Sean Wilson 21-13 and 21-14 in the men’s doubles, while in the women’s doubles, C Leyow-Mayne and D O’Connor got the better of Ruth Williams and Wynter 21-18 and 21-17.
Albert Myles whipped Joseph Clarke 21-7 and 21-7 to take the Masters men’s singles. Myles then teamed up with Kirk Palmer and defeated the pair of Neil Saunders and Ricardo Teape 21-10 and 21-17 in the Masters men’s doubles. Myles then won a third title when he and Nichole Case got the better of Joseph Clarke and Michelle Champagine 20-22, 21-15, and 21-6 in the Masters mixed doubles.
