Police urge caution on roads after pedestrian killed in Huddersfield crash
ST MARY, Jamaica—Huddersfield main road claimed another life on Thursday, May 14, after a pedestrian was struck by a motor truck.
Dead is 28-year-old Oneil Tavares known to many in the community as “Philly”. He died after being hit while walking along along the roadway in St Mary.
The incident took place around 8:45 pm.
According to the St Mary police, Tavares was walking along the roadway when he reportedly stepped into the path of a westbound Toyota Hiace truck. He sustained severe injuries and was rushed to the St Ann’s Bay hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The driver of the truck remained at the scene.The incident has left the community of Huddersfield shaken.
Meanwhile, the St Mary police are renewing their appeal to both motorists and pedestrians to slow down and stay alert.
“Pedestrians are encouraged to remain alert and use safe areas when walking, while motorists are urged to drive responsibly, remain vigilant and observe the road and its surroundings at all times, the police said in a news release.Officials say nighttime travel on narrow roads like Huddersfield demands extra care, especially where street lighting is limited and pedestrians often share the road with traffic.
Investigations are ongoing.
