Meta glasses aid in capture of alleged jewelry thief
KINGSTON, Jamaica — A 38-year-old man was captured by police after allegedly being caught on Meta glasses in the process of snatching a tourist’s chain.
Kingston Central police charged Osaka Gillespie, otherwise called ‘Saka’, a tradesman of Bull Bay, St Andrew, with larceny from the person following the incident on Mark Lane, Kingston, on Monday.
Reports from the police indicate that about 11:00 am, a Canadian couple were walking on the roadway when Gillespie allegedly approached them, forcibly snatched a gold chain from the woman’s neck and fled the scene on foot.
The incident was subsequently reported to the police. The encounter was reportedly captured on camera worn by the woman’s spouse. Investigators extracted the footage, which reportedly helped to implicate Gillespie in the incident.
Gillespie was later arrested and positively identified by the complainant. He was formally charged with the offence on Wednesday, November 4.
He is scheduled to appear before the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court on Monday, November 9.
