Politicians hit sour note with artistes
GENERAL elections are in the air. Political pundits surmise that in December Jamaicans will go to the polls to either re-elect the People’s National Party (PNP) for a second term, or the Opposition Jamaica Labour Party (JLP).
The music business has always been part of the political discourse. In 1972, the famed ‘musical bandwagon’ of top artistes helped firebrand union leader Michael Manley become prime minister.
Over the years, several artistes have backed either party. This year, however, the entertainment industry seems to be among the thousands of disenchanted who will not vote.
Roots singjay Kabaka Pyramid got the ball rolling early this year with his catchy Well Done, a sarcastic jab at “Missa politician man”.
Other artistes have recorded songs on the current political situation in Jamaica and why they won’t vote.
