Cops probe car-stealing scheme with licence plate ruse
KINGSTON, Jamaica – Police are warning motorists to be on the lookout for criminal elements who may be part of a car-stealing scheme that they are now investigating.
The police say they have been hearing that unsuspecting motorists are being targeted by criminals, who remove their licence plates as part of a scheme to steal their motor vehicles.
Police say under the carjacking scheme, criminals target and follow motorists to parking lots.
When the motor vehicles are left unattended, criminal elements then remove the licence plates. They then follow the motorists when they leave these parking lots.
Reports are that the criminals then attempt to overtake the motorists while displaying their licence plates, signalling unsuspecting motorists to stop.
When the motorists stop, they are reportedly held at gunpoint and their motor vehicles stolen.
Police say they are investigating.
