International Day for Elimination of Violence Against Women
November 25th has been dubbed by the United Nations General Assembly International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. Internationally, violence against women is at shocking levels and has impeded progress toward goals of peace and equality. Locally, it is not a problem to which we are immune.
35% of women and girls globally experience some form of physical and/or sexual violence in their lifetime. And although there is little data available on psychological abuse, there is existing evidence to suggest a high prevalence of this strain of violence against women that diminishes their sense of dignity and self-worth through methods such as verbal assault, confinement, intimidation and threats of physical violence.
Awareness that violence against women is very real and very prevalent, is only the first step. An important one nonetheless. TEENs are encouraged to stand – regardless of their gender – in support of progress and change that will see the world becoming a safer, better place for both males and females.
We have to believe that we can effect change. But we will also have to be prepared to stand with our mothers, daughters, sisters, aunts and friends.
