Barca rampant on Matchday 5
Champions League returned this week with lots of excitement and lots of goals. These are the highlights:
Barcelona continued to show dominance on Tuesday against Roma at the Camp Nou. Barcelona ripped through the Romans’ defense, beating them 6-1. Lionel Messi who has been missing because of injury, showed the world he is truly back, netting two goals. Luis Suarez also scored two while Gerard Pique and Adriano scored the other goals. After a long night of trying to crack the defense, Edin Džeko from Roma managed to get one past ter Stegen in the 90th minute. Barcelona are group winners and will progress to the Round of 16 following their massive win, while a win against Bate Borisov will secure Roma a place in the round of 16.
Another exciting fixture on Tuesday was Chelsea vs Maccabi Tel Aviv. The Blues recorded their second straight win beating M.Tel Aviv 4-0. Jose Mourinho made important changes in the team to ensure a victory by starting without John Terry and Nemanja Matic. The Blues earned a clean sheet and was ensured of the three points with goals from Willian, Oscar, Diego Costa and Cesc Fàbregas. Even though he was without a goal, the man of the match would have to be Ruben Loftus-Cheek of Chelsea as he had a 93% pass success rate and generally played well. Chelsea is not yet through to the Round of 16, but they are leading their group with 10 points while M. Tel Aviv have been eliminated.

On Wednesday Real Madrid narrowly escaped with three points, beating Shakhtar Donestsk 4-3. Madrid looked to recover from their embarrassing El Clasico defeat and almost were not able to. Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring for Los Blancos and ended up scoring two goals. Luka Modric and Dani Carvajal also netted goals in an effort to keep Real Madrid well ahead in the game. In the 77th minute Alex Teixeira opened the scoring for Shakhtar Donetsk. Not long after in the 83rd minute Ferreira Bonfim netted one, and in the 88th minute Teixeira scored a penalty. This left Madrid scrambling to keep the three points and they managed to hold out to full time. Real Madrid are already through to the Round of 16 and Shakhtar Donestsk has been eliminated.
Paris Saint-Germain thrashed Malmo 5-0 at the Swedbank Stadion on Wednesday. All eyes were on Zlatan Ibrahimovic as he returned to his old stadium even though this time he was with PSG. He scored PSG’s third goal of the game but he refused to celebrate his goal against his former club. PSG also had goals coming from Adrien Rabiot, Rodrigues Lucas Moura and two from Angel Di Maria. Malmo had the chance to reduce the deficit but Markus Rosenberg missed his penalty. PSG have secured a spot in the Round of 16 behind Real Madrid and consequently Malmo has been eliminated.
