Immaculate Preparatory were crowned victors of the Amateur Swimming Association of Jamaica (ASAJ) Prep/Primary Schools championship, but the meet was highlighted by Zaneta Alvaranga and Joshua Alleyne at the National Aquatic Centre on Saturday.

Immaculate Preparatory once again proved too good for rivals as they amassed a total of 372.5 points to claim another crown, following their reign at the Nestle Prep/Primary championships earlier this year.

Wolmer’s claimed the runner-up spot with a combined 346 points, while Sts Peter & Paul (282), Hillel (196) and Mona (180) completed the top five.

However, the day belonged to Alvaranga and Alleyne who combined to total six of the eight individual records established. The meet, which was staged in mostly overcast conditions conducive for swimming, also saw two relay records being erased with a record 46 schools participating.

With this being the first meet for preparatory and primary schools for the 2015-2016 academic year and the early season form shown by some of the swimmers, one can anticipate an exciting year of swimming to come at both the school and club levels.

The stage was set for fast swimming and Alleyne of Sts Peter & Paul opened his account with a smashing 37.51 seconds clocking in the Boys’ 11-12 50-metre backstroke event to erase the previous mark of 38.29 seconds.

He later followed up with an even faster 30.54-second clocking in the 50-metre freestyle event to pull down the old mark of 31.80 seconds, just four-hundredth of a second ahead of runner-up Nathaniel Thomas (30.58sec), who also went below the old mark.

And the 11-year-old Alleyne then finished up by lowering the old mark of 1:13.03 minute in the 100 metre freestyle event when he stopped the clock at 1:08.79 minutes and again pulled Thomas (1:12.76) below the previous mark.

But while Alleyne was starring on the male side, young sensation Alvaranga of St Hugh’s Prep was not to be out done and she opened with a blistering 30.02-second clocking in the Girls’ 9-10 50-metre freestyle. With her superb form, she obliterated the previous national age-group record of 31.92 seconds which she has changed three times since May of this year.

The 10-year-old returned later to pull down the previous mark of 1:13.27 minutes in the 100 equivalent with a fast 1:10.94 minutes, before closing with 33.29 seconds in the 50 metre butterfly event, erasing the precious mark of 35. 63 seconds.

The up-and-coming Christanya Shirley of Wolmer’s also etched her name in the record books when she lowered the Girls’ 7-8 50-metre freestyle record of 35.43 seconds after stopping the clock at 35.33 seconds. She established her second milestone in the 50-metre butterfly event with a quick 38.77 second clocking to wipe out the old mark of 41.43 seconds.

Meanwhile, Wolmer’s Prep ‘A’ clocked a new record of 2:07.86 minutes to win the Boys’ 6 & Under 200 metre freestyle relay and pull down the old time of 3:13.67 minutes. Hillel Prep ‘B’ (2:43.67) and Mona Prep ‘A’ (3:07.51) who were second and third, respectively, were also below the old mark.

Immaculate Prep ‘A’ won the Girls 11-12 200 metre freestyle relay in 2:30.67 minutes to shave three-hundredths of a second off the old mark of 2:33.28 minutes.
