Ex-cop gets 15 years for kidnapping businessman

AN ex-cop was on Friday slapped with a 15-year prison sentence following his conviction for the 2011 kidnapping of a businessman form the upscale community of Norbrook in St Andrew.

Alpheus Wade was convicted last month by a seven-member jury, capping an extended trial in the Home Circuit Court.

Wade, 36, was only spared a 20-year sentence because he had been behind bars since his arrest soon after the June 2011 kidnapping.

The court heard that Wade and other men kidnapped the businessman on June 15, 2011 and reportedly demanded a ransom of US4500,000, but the victim managed to escape the following day by jumping out of the kidnappers’ vehicle in Portmore, during a shootout between the kidnappers and the police.

The businessman then reported the matter to the Waterford Police.

Identification cards belonging to Wade were found in the car, which was subsequently abandoned.
