I am deeply concerned about the merger between world leading pharmaceutical firms Pfizer Inc and Allergan PLC, which could result in drug prices being heightened here in Jamaica.

For consumers, this marriage could mean even more difficulty treating their illnesses, causing strain on their pockets, especially the individuals who are from a low socio-economic group.

Let us be realistic, Jamaica’s public health budget is incapable of meeting the health needs of all its citizens. In fact, Drug Serv (through the National Health Fund) is already struggling to supply the market, as it is. I am sure that there are Jamaicans who have been deprived of certain tablets, resulting in their deaths, which could have been avoided if the drugs weren’t so expensive. Poor people can’t afford the medication now, and if Pfizer increases the cost it will mean that they won’t be able to access the drugs at all. Our only saving grace has been local companies like Lasco that are making generic alternatives available. Poor people now have a real chance to get treatment, but I am worried that increases will put a nail in more coffins.
