IT has been just over one year since Sasha Dias released her first album, Break Free. The South Florida-born singer is working on her second set which includes a familiar song.

Dias, 24, covers The Love That a Woman Should Give to a Man, a hit for rocksteady queen Phyllis Dillon in 1969.

The song was originally done by American soul singer Patti Drew, which Dias recently found out.

“I was familiar with the Phyllis Dillon version and when I was about to record it, I did some research and discovered the original by Patti Drew,” she told Splash.

Dias was encouraged to cover The Love That a Woman Should Give to a Man by Lindel Thompson who produced Break Free. That set included her take on Power of Love, made popular by Jennifer Rush and Celine Dion.

She said there is a balance between doing covers and originals.

“I like doing cover songs because they are familiar to people and I can put my own flair, but what I really enjoy doing is an original, knowing people haven’t heard it before.”

Dias was born in Fort Lauderdale to Jamaican parents. Her grandfather, Winston Dias, was a singer who had a minor rocksteady hit during the 1960s with Cercy Tea.

The 14-track Break Free contained mostly original songs co-written by Thompson. According to Dias, her follow-up, expected to be out in early 2016, shows growth.

“I want it to be really different…I want to show that I have matured as a singer,” she said.
