US welcomes extradition of eight Bahamians
NASSAU, Bahamas (CMC) – The United States on Tuesday said the decision to extradite eight Bahamians sends a “strong message” that the Perry Christie government and the courts are not prepared to tolerate crime.
The eight men were extradited on Monday to the United States on drug trafficking charges.
“The Bahamian government and Bahamian courts have sent a strong message that those accused of crimes that jeopardize the safety of Bahamian citizens will not be allowed to hide from justice,” said US Chargé d’ Affaires Lisa Johnson.
“This extradition strikes a blow against organised crime and narcotics trafficking in The Bahamas.
We commend this decision, which is evidence of the close and productive security partnership the United States shares with The Bahamas,” she added.
The Diplomat said Washington will “continue to work in cooperation with The Bahamas to respond to the threats posed by transnational criminal organisations”.
The Bahamas government said the eight Bahamians were extradited pursuant to the Extradition Act.
