Here are six movies that we are looking forward to seeing in January. These aren’t ALL the watchable releases but we tried to include different options from the casual moviegoer to horror fans to comedy fans etc.

The 5th Wave

With the Hunger Games concluding, and other book-based movie series’ like Divergent and Maze Runner not really gaining any sort of hype, The 5th Wave could be that movie that everybody will be pretending that they read/knew about before you.

Based on a trilogy of books, it features Chloe Moretz (also seen in Kickass), who plays Cassie, a girl trying to survive a post-apocalyptic, alien-destroyed wasteland while also trying to save her little brother. 

Depending on the kind of person you are (easily disappointed or nah), you might want to get the books before January 22 when the movie comes out. Read it before and prepare to be disappointed, probably. Or read it after and notice how many things the movie was probably missing.

The Forest 

January 8th in the US) instead follows as a girl (who looks suspiciously like Margaery Tyrell from Game of Thrones) tries desperately to track down her identical twin sister, claiming to sense that she is in danger. Her search brings her to Japan to ‘Suicide Forest’ where her sister was last believed to be.

This horror flick looks promising if only for its cultural truths and for its somewhat a-typical plot. You don’t have to be a horror fan to know a good chunk of horror films follow college kids on Spring Break or a bunch of mismatched friends or acquaintances in some dense tropical forest. She secures a guide and enters the forest despite local warnings to stay away and even opts to stay over night and trod off-path in her all-consuming need to find her sister. How’s that for sisterly love? Cue creepy hallucinations, strange voices, clues and dead bodies of hikers who came to the forest to commit suicide…..or did they?Fifty Shades Of Black

January 29th (US).Dirty GrandpaThe Revenant

This is the Fifty Shades Of Grey parody you probably never knew you needed….without all the S&M and drama. If you liked the 2004 comedy White Chicks there’s a chance that you’re guaranteed at least half the laughs at this flick, if Marlon Wayans’ lead role as Christian Black has anything to say about it.

Imagine heading to Daytona Beach, Florida with an elderly, soon-to-be in law of yours who suggests you cut lose with a bunch of college kids on Spring Break, while he does the same. You can’t? Just watch Zac Efron and Robert De Niro do it, then.

In this flick Zac plays an uptight professional, engaged to be married. He somehow gets wrangled into driving with his fiancé’s grandfather, who then encourages him to take a detour in Daytona Beach and follow suit in drinking and partying with college girls.

With it’s comedic base line and shirtless Zac Efron scenes this movie might just hit it big.

Despite the US initial release of this anticipated flick having been Christmas day, it has yet to be released locally. But that hasn’t deterred interest.

The movie promises to be dramatic and intense and we’re all hoping that Leonardo DiCaprio will finally cop an Oscar for his lead role in the film, especially since we’ve all heard the whispers about the muck and grime and raw meat-y conditions of playing the role.The Passengers

Somewhat reminiscent of The Fantastic Four, a small group of people survive a plane crash and are brought in for therapy and psychiatric evaluation when the doctor realises one of them has developed some extra-sensory abilities or some other inexplicable abnormality.

There’s a bit of illicit doctor-patient romance and drama and mystery mingled in as well. There’s also the presence of Anne Hathaway as the leading lady, to draw out movie-goers. But unfortunately that mightn’t be enough to sell the plot or the trailer. We’ll see.
