Caribbean acts hot, hot, hot in UK
Seven Caribbean artistes made the United Kingdom’s official Top 100 songs chart of 2015.
The weekly chart ranks the best-selling singles in the UK, using data from vinyl and digital sales as well as streaming and radio play.
The artistes are OMI, Jason Derulo, Rihanna, Major Lazer, Lunchmoney Lewis and Nicki Minaj and R City.
Jamaican OMI spent five weeks at number one with the Felix Jaehn remix of
Cheerleader. He finished the year-end chart at number two.
Derulo, who has Haitian heritage, scored his fourth number one single in the UK with
Want to Want Me. The song, from his albumEverything is 4, finished the year at number 16 on the Top 100. It has so far sold 701,000 copies in the UK.
Major Lazer comprises two Caribbean nationals, Jamaican Walshy Fire and Trinidadian Jillionaire. The EDM outfit scored big with
Lean On featuring Mo and DJ Snake.
Lean On is taken from the albumPeace is The Mission and finished the year at number seven.
At number 18 is
FourFiveSeconds by Barbadian Rihanna. She teamed with rapper Kanye West and Paul McCartney for the single which peaked at number three in the UK. It has been certified platinum there for sales of over 600,000.
Bills by rapper Lunchmoney Lewis peaked at number two during the summer. It ended up at number 46 on the Top 100 tally. Lewis is the son of Inner Circle co-founder Ian Lewis.
US Virgin Islands natives R City scored their first hit as artistes. Known as songwriters and producers, the duo teamed with Maroon 5 lead singer Adam Levine on the hit
Locked Away.
Locked Away went as far as number two in the UK where it sold over 200,000 copies. It ranks at number 51 on the Top 100.
Trinidad-born Nicki Minaj scored big with David Guetta’s
Hey Mama which featured Afrojack. The song peaked at number nine in the UK and has been certified gold for sales of 400,000. It ranks at number 54 on the year-end tally.
