Bumper crowd at classic meet
IT was a large turnout for the Jamaica Classic Car Club’s (JCCC) first meet for 2016 at Hope Gardens in St Andrew, on January 11.
“It was an excellent meet and I’m very pleased with the turnout,” Shane Angus, president — JCCC, told
Auto.
With 43 cars and two motorcycles, passing through at various times at the afternoon event, there was plenty to see for all. Angus added that the club increased its membership by four on the day. He gave the new insurance scheme with partner British Caribbean Insurance Company Limited (BCIC) as part of the reason for the increase in attendance.
“Everyone is taking advantage of the new insurance package which is getting more cars back on the road,” he said.
The other reason for the expansion is his original mandate that saw the club redefining what is considered a classic.
“We’re reaching out to a new generation and their type of classic cars,” he said.
The change was evident with plenty of eye candy and a few celebrities in the mix, ranging from Olympic superstar Asafa Powell’s R32 Nissan Skyline GT-R to the mint 1964 Mk2 Jaguar owned by Tom Connor, managing director — Toyota Jamaica Limited.
“It took three years to restore it. It was pretty rough when I got it,” he explained.
A fan of the classic shape, Connor wasn’t disappointed to finally drive one of his automotive heroes.
“It was a very rewarding build. We just added some stuff for modern reliability. It drives well and has loads of torque,” he said.
Despite the overflow of options to gawk at, there was one to top them all, the 1990 Winnebago Recreational Vehicle of Mandeville collector and JCCC member Victor Dixon Jr.
“Basically it’s a hotel on wheels,” said Dixon Jr.
He spent the afternoon giving tours of the massive and luxurious interior to the captivated public.
