St Elizabeth roads blocked in protest against Appleton injunction
ST ELIZABETH, Jamaica – The St Elizabeth police are struggling to clear roads in northern St Elizabeth blocked by people protesting the delays in the start of the sugar crop because of a court injunction against the Appleton sugar factory.
Reports say the court injunction was granted in favour of Newton-based fish producer, Algix Jamaica, who claim millions of fish were lost last year because of the release of effluent from Appleton into waterways.
The protestors, including factory workers, contractors, cane cutters, and cane farmers say they are being denied their livelihood.
Police told OBSERVER ONLINE Tuesday they had succeeded in clearing roadblocks in Holland Bamboo and at Newton.
However, up to early afternoon, blockages remained in areas such as Maggotty, Cocoa, Appleton, and Union.
More information later.
