Liverpool Advances to Capital One Cup Final
Jurgen Klopp has been given the opportunity to win his first major trophy as Liverpool manager after witnessing his team defeat Stoke on penalties in what was a very tense affair at Anfield.
It was Joe Allen who scored the winning penalty for the Reds after goalkeeper Simon Mignolet gave his team a massive advantage by keeping out two of Stoke’s penalties, saving Marc Muniesa’s before Allen, who has had a fantastic run of games recently, slotted home the winner giving Liverpool the opportunity to face off against Manchester City or Everton at Wembley.
It was Liverpool who came into the match as slight favourites knowing that they had a 1-0 advantage from the first leg and also the exceptional record of having never lost the home leg of a League Cup semifinal.
However, it was Stoke who decided not to go according to the script, scoring just seconds before the half time break from a tap in by Arnautovic, who easily side-footed home a Bojan Krkic pass while the Liverpool defenders were nowhere to be found.
The remainder of the match saw both teams having minimal opportunities with Liverpool coming close in the second half after Butland had spectacularly tipped a Roberto Firmino shot unto the crossbar, keeping his team in the match.
It was then unto penalties, with both sides missing one of their first five penalties, Crouch and Emre Can the unlucky individuals. After Glenn Whelan, Afellay, Shaqiri and Van Ginkel were successful from the spot for Stoke and Lallana, Benteke, Firminio, Milner and Lucas for Liverpool, Muniesa then missed his allowing Allen to send Anfield into a state of Euphoria.
