Gov’t to answer questions at today’s final sitting of Parliament
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The House of Representatives is expected to deal with two important sets of questions from Opposition members of Parliament, when it meets today for the final time before the February 25 general election.
The questions concern: the issue of allowances paid to the CEO of the Agro-Investment Corporation (AIC); and, allegations that a local importer of motor vehicles brought in 200 motor vehicles without an import licence, and has not been penalised for the action.
The questions were scheduled to be answered last Tuesday, but the noisy sitting ended without the ministers – Derrick Kellier, minister of Agriculture and Fisheries and Anthony Hylton, minister of Industry, Investment and Commerce (MIIC) — being able to table the answers. However, they have been prioritised on today’s schedule.
Opposition spokesman on Agriculture and Fisheries JC Hutchinson and Opposition spokesman on Industry, Investments and Commerce, Karl Samuda, tabled the respective questions.
Today’s agenda also includes two Bills delayed from last week: the Bill shortly entitled, “The Judicature (Resident Magistrates) (Amendment and Change of Name) Act, 2015” and the Bill shortly entitled, “The Judicature (Supreme Court) (Amendment) Act, 2015.
Both Bills will be piloted by Attorney General Patrick Atkinson, who will be making his final contribution to the House as he will not be a candidate in the general election.
Parliament will be dissolved on Friday, to make way for the holding of the election and the swearing-in of a new Parliament afterwards.
