JAMAICANS have reacted angrily to the murder of Manchester couple – Lansil Gregory, 71, and his 74-year-old wife, Corita. The bodies of the Gregorys, who returned from the United States, were found at their home in Edinburgh on Monday. Here are some edited comments.

@spanishtown12: Good point, mi brethren. I plan to return home. I even joke that Jamaica is where I want to die and be buried. BUT I do not intend for my life to be taken by someone else, through this or any other conceivable method. These badmindedness, laziness, visionless, grudgefulness, long yeye and red yeye are like many cancers. Even if you cure one, the others are just waiting and preying upon the innocent, honest and hardworking people of Jamaica.

Condolence to the victims’ families. Most Jamaican expats envisioned being retired and resettled on the island — living in peace.

It’s clear that returning residents are targeted by criminals. There’s a belief that they have more than what they deserved or worked for. I have experienced that first- hand (grandparents).

It’s unbelievably tragic for a patriotic couple, who decided to return to their home after working hard abroad, to have their lives brutally snuffed out by envious, lazy and illiterate people. This type of crime is more damaging to Jamaica’s image abroad, particularly to the retired and soon-to-be retiring community than the occasional tourist victimisation. This demographic of Jamaicans could potentially come home and add seismically to the economic growth of this country. But, without vision, the people perish.

Every time I see returning residents killed in Jamaica it causes me to rethink every day why I DO NOT want to return to the land of my birth to live when I retire. It is a shame to know that when you work so hard overseas and send remittances to help the country while working, you are murdered when you come home to live.
