An Endless Love
The master bedroom offers a classical carved Jamaican four-poster bed, its own sitting area and an expansive bathroom with soaking tub and outside garden shower.

An Endless Love

SO’s Valentine’s Day feature — where to spend a romantic Valentine’s weekend — wraps today at Cottages 20 & 21 of the Round Hill Hotel & Villas, with exquisite interiors by Sue Williams.

These are beautiful and very Jamaican cottages; each room certainly has its own warmth and feel. However, there’s a repeat and connection among all within the architectural and design elements.

The essence of the architecture and design is one of the traditional Jamaican/Round Hill cottage that has been infused with the classicism of Georgian elegance and balance. It remains casual yet elegant, warm yet disciplined, and makes the most of the terrain, the views, the winds and the existing trees.

All four cottages are interconnected by garden pathways – towering cotton trees, hundreds of years old, and at Cottage 21 the mango tree, grafted to bear three different species of mango, still stands guard and bears fruit for the breakfast table of lucky guests.

The traditional Round Hill architecture – cedar shingle roof claddings, shaded verandahs supported by white painted wooden columns, louvred windows, crisp mouldings painted a glossy white, frame stained windows and doors, and high ceilings warmed with soft cove lighting – has been respected.

Each suite is self-contained and allows guests the luxury of intimate and comfortable personal spaces when alone, and expansive gathering and entertainment spaces when family and friends convene.

Mahogany furniture is carved and polished by local craftsmen, while fabrics become crisp curtaining and soft slipcovers hand crafted by talented artisans. The success of these wonderful spaces is a result of local manufacturers and artists.

Bathrooms are warmed by polished mahogany vanities topped with sleek slabs of Calacatta Gold Marble. The tub counters are clad in this marble, which is used to line all shower walls with an unbroken length of matched and seamless veining.

All faucets and fittings are of polished chrome from supply companies such as Waterworks, Rohl and Toto. Magically, every bathroom on the ground floor has an outside shower for bathing under the stars.

The master bedroom of Cottage 20 – the panelled and mirrored wall behind the bed reflects the mountains and sea. This room has a covered verandah that overlooks the pool, and the bathroom offers a soaking tub, double vanities and a walk-in shower.
