Edna Manley student commissioned to create Sigma Run trophies
Getting that big break in the local art industry is often difficult for aspiring artists, even in an era where technology has made it easier for people to communicate and showcase their talent online or via social media.
Ramon Christie, third-year student at Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts, was referred to Sagicor by his lecturer, celebrated ceramicist Norma Harrock. Christie was then commissioned by Sagicor Group Jamaica to make the 45 awards for this year’s Sigma Corporate Run set for February 21.
Sagicor Sigma Corporate Run gives trophies in categories such as, Largest Corporate Team, Best T-Shirt Design, Largest High School Team, Individual Male/Female Run.
All trophies are being created by Christie who said he was surprised and grateful on receiving news of his commission.
“When I got the call, I was actually shocked and happy at the same time. It was also a bit surreal because about two years ago I got a project to build a trophy for a company award and I chose Sagicor,” a company news release quoted Christie as saying.
“Fast-forward two years later and the company actually called me, so I think that this is a great opportunity to now showcase my talent,” he said.
The task to make all 45 trophies can’t be summed up in any other word but “hard”, Christie confessed. “I haven’t slept for about two days now because I want to do this to the best of my ability. I have been spending the time to make it as perfect as possible. The process takes time because I have to design each one to keep the integrity of the run,” he stated.
The Sagicor Sigma Corporate Run, now in its 18th year, has as its beneficiaries the Jamaica Cancer Society, children with cancer across Jamaica, and the Black River Hospital Paediatric Unit. Participants are being urged to donate to the cause by purchasing an “I Run For…” balloon from the Sagicor Sigma Corporate Run Secretariat based at the company’s head office in Kingston. The Secretariat can be reached by e-mail at SGJSigmaSecretariat@sagicor.com, or by telephone at 936-7831, 936-7843 and 936-7261.
