IN a true ‘we care’ spirit spearheaded by its Group CEO Don Wehby, a GraceKennedy team comprising 60 volunteers from across the company’s subsidiaries yesterday morning collected plastics bottles and other garbage from areas around the Kingston Harbour.

The initiative, dubbed ‘Harbour Haul’, was part of GraceKennedy’s 94th anniversary activities. The company turned 94 on Sunday.

“I was so proud to be out there with the team this morning making a difference in our own small way in a location that has been our ‘backyard’ for 94 years,” said Group CEO Don Wehby.

“One of GraceKennedy’s areas of focus has been the environment, and our GraceKennedy Foundation continues to do fantastic work in that area. From what I saw in the harbour this morning, we all have more to do in keeping our environment clean,” he said.

Wehby, who spoke to the importance of GraceKennedy’s community involvement since the company’s inception, said: “We always try to find additional ways to contribute.

“We were also happy to see the community coming out and supporting us. They were so appreciative of what we were doing that they said they had to come and join us. That made us feel really good,” said the group CEO.

The ‘Harbour Haul’ started at 7:30 am, andended at approximately 9:30 am, saw the team collecting 235.8 pounds of plastics and 783.6 pounds of garbage. The plastics will be recycled, a hugearea of focus of the GraceKennedy Foundation.

“It just goes to show what teamwork can do,” said Wehby. “We took 90 minutes out of our workday, and we feel really happy with what we were able to accomplish during that short time,” he added.
