CATHERINE HALL, St James — St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS)boys led a strong showing by western-based teams, winning two events, including the high school boys’ 4x800m in record time, at Saturday’s 38th staging of the Milo Western Relays at the Montego Bay Sports Complex.

Five boys’ teams won relays as the Junelle Bromfield-led STETHS girls 4x400m team was also impressive in front of another good crowd that braved rain to stay to the end of the meet.

The STETHS boys’ 4x800m team ran a smart 7 minutes 41.44 seconds, breaking the record 7:45.08 seconds set by Spalding High in 2014 to retain the title they won last year.

Former champions Kingston College and Holmwood Technical were second and third, respectively.

The STETHS 4x400m boys’ team anchored by Nigel Ellis won in 3 minutes 15.29 seconds, beating Garvey Maceo High 3:15.94 seconds and Kingston College 3:17.82 seconds.

The STETHS girls trailed in third place after three legs, until Bromfield took the baton and closed the 30 metre-gap by the 200m mark before motoring away from Edwin Allen High and Holmwood Technical to win in 3 minutes 40.67 seconds.

Cornwall College created one of the biggest upsets of the day, holding off defending champions and favourites Kingston College to win the Class 1 4x100m in a smart 41.02 seconds.

Mathew Brown led off the relay, handing over to hurdler Reynardo Phillips, before a blistering leg from Alrick Ottey who gave Washington Brown the lead he needed to finish to a raucous ovation.

Kingston College was second in 41.16 seconds and Garvey Maceo third in 41.21 seconds.

Munro College won the boys’ Class 2 4×100 in 42.31 seconds as Kingston College was second again, in 42.81 seconds, and Green Island third in 42.84 seconds.

Green Island won the boys’ Class 2 4x200m in 1 minute 31.99 seconds with Kingston College taking second (1:32.74) and Munro College third in 1:32.79 seconds.
