Electrifying end anticipated at tomorrow’s Digicel Grand Prix
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Digicel Grand Prix Athletic Championship series is expected to come to an electrifying end at the GC Foster
Classics tomorrow.The meet staged at the National Stadium last year, will return home to the recently refurbished synthetic track at the St Catherine-based institution, starting at 9:00 am.The other meets on the day are the SW Isaac Henry meet at the National Stadium, Mt Dinthill Development meet at Dinthill, and the Ben Francis Invitational at Vere Technical in Clarendon.
The excitement will be built around the Grand Prix events where a number of Jamaica’s top high school Class one and two athletes who qualified from the five regional meets will battle in the 100m, 200m,400m, 800m, 4X400m relays, along with the discus and long and high
jumps.
Last year’s male and female winning teams, Edwin Allen and St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS), are the top contending schools that will have athletes vying for one of the top three spots in the respective events.
The top male and female teams will again walk away with $1 million in equipment, while the coaches are set to receive a prize of $50,000.
The first place athlete in the Grand Prix events will receive a Digicel smartphone.
There will also be a $20,000 academic scholarship up for grabs should an athlete achieve a record-breaking performance. The scholarship will be made payable to the school attended by the respective athletes in September.
